2010 BMK

This series was captured in 2008 in “Cabo Verde”, a group of 10 former Portuguese islands, about 550 kms west of the coast of Senegal with an estimated population of 500.000.

Cape Verde is a so-called developing country, receiving financial aids from several foreign countries and organizations. The government encourages initiatives to improve local social circumstances and economy.

During my visit I collected tokens of the struggle, as seen in so many developing countries, to initiate successful rural and private investments from financial aid programs. Often, due to very various reasons, the financial budgets are spent before an investment has obtained a healthy economical future.

I was most impressed by the optimism of the “always smiling” Cape Verdeans. Consequently I named this series "Sorrisos".

With this selection of 20 images I have been awarded a "Master"-title (bondsmeesterklasse - BMK), granted by the Dutch Federation for Amateur Photographers (Fotobond).
